Temperament
Beagle: Beagles are friendly, curious, and merry hounds with a strong pack instinct. They are excellent family dogs, great with children, and sociable with other dogs. Their strong scent drive means they can be easily distracted on walks. Beagles can be vocal — their distinctive bay and howl can be problematic in apartments. They are food-motivated which aids training but also makes them skilled counter-surfers.
French Bulldog: French Bulldogs are playful, adaptable, and affectionate companions. They are excellent apartment dogs due to their small size and moderate exercise needs. Frenchies are sociable and get along well with other pets and children. They can be stubborn during training but respond well to positive reinforcement. They crave human attention and can suffer from separation anxiety.
Exercise Needs
Beagle: Beagles are energetic dogs needing at least 1-2 hours of daily exercise. They love long walks, particularly in areas with interesting scents. A securely fenced garden is essential as they will follow a scent trail regardless of boundaries. They enjoy games, agility, and scent work activities.
French Bulldog: French Bulldogs need moderate exercise — about 30-60 minutes of daily walks and play. They are brachycephalic (flat-faced), which means they overheat easily and should not be exercised in hot weather. Short walks and indoor play sessions are ideal. They are not suited to swimming as their body shape makes them prone to drowning.
Health
Beagle: Common health concerns include epilepsy, hypothyroidism, cherry eye, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), hip dysplasia, and ear infections. Their floppy ears need regular cleaning. Beagles are prone to obesity as they will eat anything and everything. Regular weight monitoring is essential.
French Bulldog: French Bulldogs are prone to numerous health issues related to their flat face, including brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which causes breathing difficulties. Other concerns include spinal problems (IVDD), skin allergies, cherry eye, and ear infections. Many require caesarean sections for birth. Potential owners should be aware of the significant veterinary costs.
Grooming
Beagle: Beagles have a short, weather-resistant double coat that sheds moderately. Weekly brushing keeps the coat healthy. They are relatively low-maintenance grooming-wise. Regular ear cleaning is important due to their long, floppy ears. They rarely need professional grooming but benefit from occasional baths.
French Bulldog: Their short, smooth coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. However, their facial folds need daily cleaning to prevent bacterial and yeast infections. Regular ear cleaning is essential. They are moderate shedders. Nail trimming should be done regularly as they are not active enough to wear nails down naturally.
