Temperament

Border Collie: Border Collies are widely regarded as the most intelligent dog breed. They are intense, focused, and driven, with an extraordinary work ethic. They excel in obedience, agility, herding, and virtually any canine sport. However, their intelligence means they need constant mental stimulation — a bored Border Collie will find its own entertainment, often destructively. They are best suited to experienced, active owners.

Bordoodle: Bordoodle dogs tend to be friendly, adaptable, and intelligent, often combining the best traits of their parent breeds. They are typically good family dogs that enjoy human companionship and playtime. Each individual can vary in personality, so getting to know your specific dog's temperament is important. Positive socialisation and training help bring out their best qualities.

Exercise Needs

Border Collie: Border Collies have extremely high exercise needs — at least 2 hours daily, ideally more. They need both physical exercise and mental challenges. Simple walks are not enough; they need running, herding activities, agility, or advanced training. Without adequate stimulation, they can develop obsessive behaviours like shadow-chasing or tail-spinning.

Bordoodle: Bordoodle dogs typically need about 1 hour of daily exercise, though this varies based on their size and build. A mix of walks, play, and mental stimulation keeps them happy and healthy. Observe your individual dog's energy levels and adjust accordingly. Most mixed breeds are adaptable and enjoy a variety of activities.

Health

Border Collie: Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, collie eye anomaly (CEA), epilepsy, and trapped neutrophil syndrome (TNS). They can also be susceptible to noise phobias and anxiety. The merle gene in some lines can be associated with deafness and eye defects when two merles are bred together.

Bordoodle: Bordoodle dogs may benefit from hybrid vigour, potentially reducing the risk of some inherited conditions. However, they can still be prone to health issues common to their size category. Regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are important. Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise is key to long-term health.

Grooming

Border Collie: Border Collies come in rough and smooth coat varieties. Rough-coated dogs need brushing 2-3 times per week, more during shedding season. Smooth coats need less frequent brushing. They shed moderately year-round with heavier seasonal shedding. Regular nail trimming and ear checking are important.

Bordoodle: Grooming needs for Bordoodle dogs depend on their individual coat type — some may have shorter, low-maintenance coats while others require more regular brushing. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are important regardless of coat type. Establish a grooming routine early to keep your dog comfortable and healthy.
