Why Chocolate Is Dangerous
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is — baking chocolate and dark chocolate have the highest concentrations. Symptoms appear within 6-12 hours and include vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, seizures, and in severe cases, death. Even small amounts of dark chocolate can be dangerous for small dogs. White chocolate has very little theobromine but is still unhealthy due to fat and sugar content. If your dog eats chocolate, contact your vet immediately — they will need to know the type, amount eaten, and your dog's weight.
