If in doubt, always call your vet or the Animal Poison Line immediately.

Why It's Dangerous

Dark and baking chocolate have the highest theobromine content of any chocolate type, 5-10 times more than milk chocolate. Theobromine overstimulates the heart and central nervous system, and dogs metabolise it far more slowly than humans, causing it to accumulate to dangerous levels.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Restlessness and hyperactivity
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Tremors
  • Seizures in severe cases

Vet Guidance

Contact your vet or emergency vet immediately, even for a small amount, given how concentrated dark chocolate is. Bring the packaging to confirm cocoa percentage and quantity.
