Why It's Dangerous

Raw, unripe elderberries and the plant's leaves, stems, and bark contain cyanogenic glycosides that release cyanide-like compounds. Fully ripe, cooked berries are much lower risk, but raw or unripe parts should be avoided.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weakness
  • Dilated pupils in more significant exposures
  • Lethargy

Vet Guidance
