If in doubt, always call your vet or the Animal Poison Line immediately.

Why It's Dangerous

Sloe berries themselves are not seriously toxic, but the pits contain amygdalin similar to other stone fruits, and unripe or raw sloes are extremely astringent and can cause digestive upset if eaten in quantity.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drooling from the astringent taste
  • Dilated pupils if a significant number of chewed pits were involved

Vet Guidance

Monitor for digestive upset after a small amount. Contact your vet if a large number of berries with chewed pits were eaten.
