Why It's Dangerous
Star anise contains anethole and other essential oil compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset. A related but distinct species, Japanese star anise, contains genuinely toxic neurotoxins and should never be used interchangeably.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Drooling
- Lethargy
- Tremors or seizures if Japanese star anise is involved
Vet Guidance
Contact your vet, particularly if the species of star anise isn't known for certain, given the risk of confusion with the toxic Japanese variety.
