Can Dogs Eat Fish Sauce?

Fish sauce is one of the saltiest condiments commonly found in a kitchen, used widely in Southeast Asian cooking, and its strong, pungent smell can actually make it more likely to attract a dog's attention than a milder sauce would. Because it's so concentrated, even a small amount lapped up directly represents a meaningful sodium dose for a dog, more so than an equivalent volume of most other liquid condiments. It's typically used in small quantities within a dish rather than eaten on its own, so the main risk comes from a dog getting into the bottle itself or a particularly heavily-sauced portion of food rather than a normal serving of a finished meal. If your dog has consumed fish sauce directly or in a large quantity, keeping fresh water available and watching for excessive thirst or vomiting is the first step.
