Can Dogs Eat Starfruit?

Starfruit is a less commonly encountered risk than something like grapes, but it deserves real caution because of its oxalic acid content and a neurotoxic effect that appears to particularly affect dogs and people with reduced kidney function, where the toxin isn't cleared from the body as efficiently as it would be by healthy kidneys. For a dog with entirely normal kidney function, a small amount is less likely to cause a severe reaction, but there's no reliable way to know a dog's exact kidney health without testing, and the consequences of getting this wrong can be serious. This is one of those foods where the same fruit that might cause only mild upset in one dog could cause a much more significant neurological reaction in another, particularly an older dog or one with any underlying kidney concerns. Given the difficulty predicting individual risk and the seriousness of the more severe reactions reported, it's sensible to contact your vet for any known starfruit ingestion rather than just monitoring at home.
