Temperament

Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers are gentle, intelligent, and devoted companions known for their patience and reliability. They are excellent family dogs, particularly good with children. Goldens are eager to please and highly trainable, which is why they are popular as therapy and assistance dogs. They are friendly with everyone, which makes them poor guard dogs but wonderful companions.

Siberian Husky: Siberian Huskies are friendly, outgoing, and independent dogs bred for endurance and teamwork. They are pack animals who get along well with other dogs. Huskies are NOT guard dogs — they are friendly with everyone, including strangers. They are intelligent but independent, making training challenging. They have a strong prey drive and should not be trusted off-lead. Huskies are escape artists who can jump fences and dig under them.

Exercise Needs

Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers need 1-2 hours of daily exercise including walks, runs, swimming, and retrieving games. They excel in agility, obedience, and dock diving. Without sufficient exercise, they can become overweight and develop behavioural problems. They remain playful and energetic well into adulthood.

Siberian Husky: Huskies have extremely high exercise needs — at least 2 hours daily. They were bred to run long distances and have seemingly limitless energy. They love running, hiking, and pulling sports (canicross, bikejoring). Without adequate exercise, Huskies will become destructive and attempt to escape. They are not suitable for sedentary owners.

Health

Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers are prone to cancer (affecting up to 60% of the breed), hip and elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and eye problems including cataracts and pigmentary uveitis. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential. They are also prone to obesity, so diet management is important.

Siberian Husky: Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, eye conditions (cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, corneal dystrophy), hypothyroidism, and zinc-responsive dermatosis. They are generally a healthy breed with good longevity. Their thick coat protects them in cold weather but makes them prone to overheating in warm climates.

Grooming

Golden Retriever: Their beautiful long coat requires regular grooming — brushing 2-3 times per week, or daily during heavy shedding seasons. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks helps maintain coat health. Regular ear cleaning is needed to prevent infections. They are heavy shedders year-round.

Siberian Husky: Huskies have a thick double coat that sheds heavily — they "blow" their undercoat twice a year in massive shedding events. During these periods, daily brushing is essential. At other times, weekly brushing suffices. Never shave a Husky — their coat insulates them from both cold AND heat. Regular nail trimming is needed.
