The Portuguese Podengo descends from ancient hunting dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Phoenician traders thousands of years ago, and similar dogs are depicted in Roman mosaics found in Portugal. King Afonso I of Portugal is documented as having hunted with Podengo-type dogs in the 12th century during the reconquest of Portugal from Moorish rule. The breed was formally standardised in Portugal by the Clube Portugues de Canicultura in the 20th century, distinguishing the three size varieties as Grande, Medio, and Pequeno. The Podengo Pequeno was recognised by the AKC in 2013 following advocacy by the American Portuguese Podengo Association.
