If in doubt, always call your vet or the Animal Poison Line immediately.

Why It's Dangerous

Poppy seeds contain residual opioid alkaloids including morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Dogs metabolise opioids less efficiently than humans and have a more permeable blood-brain barrier, making them more sensitive to these effects.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Lethargy and sedation
  • Slowed or shallow breathing
  • Constricted pupils
  • Vomiting
  • Coma in severe cases

Vet Guidance

Contact your vet promptly if a meaningful amount of poppy seeds was eaten, particularly from a bag of seeds rather than a light sprinkling on a baked item.
