Can Dogs Eat Poppy Seeds?

Poppy seeds carry a genuine but often underappreciated risk because commercial seeds retain small residual amounts of the opioid alkaloids found in the poppy plant, including morphine, codeine, and thebaine, and dogs are considerably more sensitive to opioids than people because of differences in how their liver processes these compounds and how permeable their blood-brain barrier is. A poppy-seed bagel or muffin with a light scattering of seeds is unlikely to deliver a meaningful dose, but a dog that gets into a bag or jar of poppy seeds intended for baking, and eats a real quantity, is in a different and more concerning situation. The onset of symptoms tends to be relatively quick, typically within an hour or so, and can include the sedation and slowed breathing characteristic of opioid effects. Because the concentration of alkaloids can vary between seed batches and there's no reliable way to judge the exact dose from the outside, any significant poppy seed ingestion is worth a prompt call to your vet.
