Temperament
Chihuahua: Chihuahuas are alert, charming, and fiercely loyal to their chosen person. They have a bold, confident personality that belies their tiny size. They can be wary of strangers and may become overly protective if not properly socialised. Chihuahuas bond deeply with one person and can be jealous of attention given to others. They are intelligent but can be stubborn.
Yorkshire Terrier: Yorkshire Terriers are feisty, confident, and affectionate dogs with a big personality in a tiny package. Despite their toy size, they retain strong terrier traits — they are bold, energetic, and can be surprisingly territorial. Yorkies are devoted to their owners and make excellent companions. They can be yappy if not trained, and some can be snappy with young children who handle them roughly.
Exercise Needs
Chihuahua: Chihuahuas need about 20-30 minutes of daily exercise. Short walks and indoor play suit them well. Despite their small size, they are energetic and enjoy play sessions. They are sensitive to cold weather and may need a coat in winter. Exercise should be gentle — avoid rough play or jumping from heights as their small bones are fragile.
Yorkshire Terrier: Yorkies need about 30 minutes of daily exercise through short walks and indoor play. They are active indoors and adapt well to apartment living. Despite their small size, they enjoy exploring and playing. Be careful in cold weather as their small bodies lose heat quickly. They should always be walked on a lead as they may challenge much larger dogs.
Health
Chihuahua: Common health concerns include patellar luxation, heart disease (mitral valve disease, patent ductus arteriosus), tracheal collapse, hypoglycaemia, dental disease (very common), and hydrocephalus. Their molera (soft spot on the skull) may never fully close. Regular dental care is essential as their small mouths are prone to overcrowding.
Yorkshire Terrier: Common health concerns include dental disease (very common due to small mouths), tracheal collapse, patellar luxation, liver shunts (portosystemic shunts), Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and hypoglycaemia in puppies. Regular dental care is essential — many Yorkies need professional dental cleanings. They are also prone to eye issues.
Grooming
Chihuahua: Smooth-coat Chihuahuas need minimal grooming — weekly brushing and occasional baths. Long-coat Chihuahuas need brushing 2-3 times per week to prevent tangles. Both varieties shed moderately. Regular dental care is particularly important due to their propensity for dental disease. Nail trimming is needed as they do not wear nails down naturally.
Yorkshire Terrier: Yorkies have a long, silky coat that grows continuously like human hair. Daily brushing is essential to prevent matting. Many owners keep them in a shorter "puppy cut" for easier maintenance. Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks is recommended. They are often considered hypoallergenic as they shed very little, though no dog is truly hypoallergenic.
