About the Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a toy-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 1.8 and 2.7 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 1.4 to 2.3 kg. With an average lifespan of 14 to 16 years, the Chihuahua is a long-lived breed.

Temperament

Chihuahuas are alert, charming, and fiercely loyal to their chosen person. They have a bold, confident personality that belies their tiny size. They can be wary of strangers and may become overly protective if not properly socialised. Chihuahuas bond deeply with one person and can be jealous of attention given to others. They are intelligent but can be stubborn.

Exercise Needs

Chihuahuas need about 20-30 minutes of daily exercise. Short walks and indoor play suit them well. Despite their small size, they are energetic and enjoy play sessions. They are sensitive to cold weather and may need a coat in winter. Exercise should be gentle — avoid rough play or jumping from heights as their small bones are fragile.

Common Health Issues

Common health concerns include patellar luxation, heart disease (mitral valve disease, patent ductus arteriosus), tracheal collapse, hypoglycaemia, dental disease (very common), and hydrocephalus. Their molera (soft spot on the skull) may never fully close. Regular dental care is essential as their small mouths are prone to overcrowding.

Grooming

Smooth-coat Chihuahuas need minimal grooming — weekly brushing and occasional baths. Long-coat Chihuahuas need brushing 2-3 times per week to prevent tangles. Both varieties shed moderately. Regular dental care is particularly important due to their propensity for dental disease. Nail trimming is needed as they do not wear nails down naturally.

Paris Hilton's Chihuahua Tinkerbell, who appeared in the reality show The Simple Life from 2003, almost single-handedly created the handbag dog phenomenon that defined early 21st-century celebrity culture. Tinkerbell travelled the world in designer carriers and had her own memoir. Historically, the Cuban bandleader Xavier Cugat was never seen without a Chihuahua; he used them as accessories during concerts and in promotional photographs, often cradling one while he conducted. Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore are among the many celebrities who have owned Chihuahuas, drawn to the breed's colossal personality in a tiny frame.
