Temperament

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Cavaliers are gentle, affectionate, and graceful dogs that thrive on human companionship. They are adaptable — happy to curl up on the sofa or go for a long walk. They get along well with children, other dogs, and even cats. Cavaliers are eager to please and easy to train. They do not do well left alone for long periods and can develop separation anxiety.

Maltese: Maltese are gentle, playful, and charming companion dogs. They are affectionate and devoted to their owners, thriving on attention and companionship. Maltese are generally good with children if handled gently. They can be lively and playful, enjoying games and tricks. Some can be stubborn and may develop separation anxiety if left alone too frequently.

Exercise Needs

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Cavaliers need moderate exercise — about 30-60 minutes of daily walks and play. They adapt to their owner's activity level, enjoying both leisurely strolls and longer adventures. They have some spaniel hunting instincts and may chase small animals. They enjoy garden play and interactive games.

Maltese: Maltese need about 20-30 minutes of daily exercise through short walks and indoor play. They are active little dogs but their small size means they do not require long walks. They enjoy interactive games and learning tricks. Be cautious in wet or cold weather as their small bodies and long coat can make them uncomfortable.

Health

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Cavaliers are unfortunately prone to several serious health conditions, particularly mitral valve disease (MVD), which affects nearly all Cavaliers by age 10. Other concerns include syringomyelia (a painful skull/spine condition), hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye conditions. Health screening of breeding dogs is crucial.

Maltese: Common health concerns include dental disease, luxating patellas, progressive retinal atrophy, portosystemic liver shunts, collapsed trachea, and white dog shaker syndrome (idiopathic cerebellitis). Their white coat can show tear staining around the eyes. Regular dental care is particularly important.

Grooming

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Their medium-length, silky coat requires regular brushing 2-3 times per week to prevent tangles, particularly behind the ears and under the legs. They shed moderately. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks helps maintain coat health. Their long ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infections.

Maltese: Maltese have a long, silky white coat that requires daily brushing to prevent mats and tangles. Many owners keep them in a shorter "puppy cut" for easier maintenance. Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks is recommended. Regular tear stain cleaning under the eyes is needed. They shed very little, making them a popular choice for allergy sufferers.
