The Irish Water Spaniel was created by Dublin sportsman Justin McCarthy, whose legendary stud dog Boatswain, whelped in 1834, is the ancestor of every Irish Water Spaniel alive today. McCarthy kept his breeding programme secret during his lifetime, but Boatswain's descendants attracted the admiration of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who reportedly expressed interest in the breed after seeing it exhibited in Britain. The Irish Water Spaniel was shown at the first Birmingham Dog Show in 1860 and became popular among British and Irish sporting families throughout the Victorian era.
