About the Akbash

The Akbash is a large-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 41 and 64 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 34 to 50 kg. With an average lifespan of 10 to 11 years, the Akbash is a average-lived breed.

Temperament

Akbash dogs are confident, loyal, and often naturally protective of their families. They are intelligent and trainable, responding best to firm but fair handling. Early socialisation is important to ensure they grow into well-mannered adults. Despite their imposing size, many are gentle and affectionate with their families, including children.

Exercise Needs

Akbash dogs are active and need at least 1-2 hours of vigorous daily exercise. Long walks, hiking, and off-lead running in safe areas are ideal. They have good stamina and enjoy outdoor adventures. Puppies should have controlled exercise to protect growing joints. Mental stimulation through training is also essential.

Common Health Issues

As a large breed, Akbash dogs may be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), and joint problems. Large breeds can also be susceptible to certain cancers and heart conditions. Feeding a large-breed-specific diet during growth helps prevent skeletal issues. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for early detection of health problems.

Grooming

Akbash dogs need regular grooming including weekly brushing to manage their coat and reduce shedding. Bathing can be challenging due to their size — a walk-in shower or professional groomer may be helpful. Regular nail trimming is important. Check ears regularly, especially if they are floppy, as moisture can lead to infections.

Origin & History

Origin: Turkey

The Akbash is a traditional Turkish breed or type of flock guardian dog from western Anatolia. The word akbaş means 'white head', and thus distinguishes this dog from the Karabaş, or 'black head'. It was recognised by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2006; it is under the tutelage of the Köpek Irkları ve Kinoloji Federasyonu, the Turkish dog breed society, but is not recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

Famous Akbash Owners

David and Judy Nelson, American agricultural researchers working with the US Department of Agriculture, brought the Akbash to the United States in 1978 as part of the USDA Livestock Protection Dog Project, documenting the breed's effectiveness in Turkish mountain villages and establishing the first North American studbook. Their research transformed the Akbash from an obscure Turkish specialty into a recognised guardian breed, demonstrating its ability to deter predators without harming livestock.
