About the Giant Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer is a large-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 27 and 48 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 25 to 34 kg. With an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years, the Giant Schnauzer is a moderately long-lived breed.

Temperament

Giant Schnauzer dogs are confident, loyal, and often naturally protective of their families. They are intelligent and trainable, responding best to firm but fair handling. Early socialisation is important to ensure they grow into well-mannered adults. Despite their imposing size, many are gentle and affectionate with their families, including children.

Exercise Needs

Giant Schnauzer dogs are active and need at least 1-2 hours of vigorous daily exercise. Long walks, hiking, and off-lead running in safe areas are ideal. They have good stamina and enjoy outdoor adventures. Puppies should have controlled exercise to protect growing joints. Mental stimulation through training is also essential.

Common Health Issues

As a large breed, Giant Schnauzer dogs may be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), and joint problems. Large breeds can also be susceptible to certain cancers and heart conditions. Feeding a large-breed-specific diet during growth helps prevent skeletal issues. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for early detection of health problems.

Grooming

Giant Schnauzer dogs need regular grooming including weekly brushing to manage their coat and reduce shedding. Bathing can be challenging due to their size — a walk-in shower or professional groomer may be helpful. Regular nail trimming is important. Check ears regularly, especially if they are floppy, as moisture can lead to infections.

Origin & History

Origin: Germany

The Giant Schnauzer or Riesenschnauzer is a German breed of dog of Schnauzer type. It is larger than the other two Schnauzer breeds, the Standard Schnauzer and the Miniature Schnauzer. Originally bred to assist on farms by driving livestock to market and guarding the farmer's property, the breed eventually moved into the city, where it worked guarding breweries, butchers' shops, stockyards and factories.

Famous Giant Schnauzer Owners

The Giant Schnauzer was developed in Bavaria in the late 19th century by German breeders including Georg Riehl, who crossed Standard Schnauzers with Great Danes and Bouviers to produce a larger working dog. German noble families and wealthy industrialists adopted the breed for estate protection, and the breed subsequently became a preferred police and military dog in Germany and across Europe. Heinrich Scharmer was among the early 20th-century breeders who formalised the Giant Schnauzer standard and promoted the breed through German dog shows. The breed continues to excel as a police, security, and working dog worldwide.
