About the Koolie

The Koolie is a small-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 12 and 18 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 10 to 16 kg. With an average lifespan of 12 to 18 years, the Koolie is a long-lived breed.

Temperament

The Koolie is an energetic and affectionate breed that enjoys both playtime and cuddles. They are sociable dogs that generally get along well with other pets when properly introduced. Their alert nature makes them attentive companions, and they are quick to learn new commands when motivated by treats and praise.

Exercise Needs

Koolie dogs need about 30-60 minutes of daily exercise including walks and play. They are more active than their size suggests and enjoy exploring new environments. A secure garden is beneficial for off-lead play. They adapt well to both apartment and house living, provided they get regular outdoor time.

Common Health Issues

Koolie dogs may be prone to patellar luxation, dental disease, ear infections, and eye problems common in small breeds. Regular veterinary check-ups help catch issues early. Maintaining a healthy weight is important as even small amounts of excess weight can stress their joints. Annual health screenings are recommended.

Grooming

Koolie dogs benefit from regular brushing to maintain a healthy coat and manage shedding. Bathing every 4-6 weeks or as needed keeps the coat clean. Regular dental care, nail trimming, and ear cleaning are part of a good grooming routine. Check for any skin irritation, lumps, or parasites during grooming sessions.

Origin & History

Origin: Australia

The Koolie is an Australian dog breed. The Koolie is a working or herding dog which has existed in Australia since the early 19th century when it was bred from imported British working dogs. Robert Kaleski, in an article on Cattle Dogs in the August 1903 issue of the Agricultural Gazette of New South Wales, describes the "Welsh heeler or merle, erroneously known as the German collie," as a "blue-gray dog about the size and build of a smooth-haired collie, generally with wall eyes.

Famous Koolie Owners

The Koolie Club of Australia was formally established in 2000, with founding members voting to use the "K" spelling to distinguish the breed from Collies. The club secured recognition from the Australian Sporting Registrar in 2004, formally acknowledging a working dog that had managed Australia's vast sheep and cattle stations for generations alongside the Kelpie and Blue Heeler. The name's origins are debated, with the most supported theory tracing it to the "German Coolie" brought to South Australia by German settlers in the 19th century, whose merle-coated herding dogs crossed with local stock to produce this uniquely Australian working breed.
