About the Mixed Breed (Large)

The Mixed Breed (Large) is a mixed-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 25 and 40 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 20 to 35 kg. With an average lifespan of 10 to 13 years, the Mixed Breed (Large) is a moderately long-lived breed.

Temperament

The Mixed Breed (Large) is an adaptable and sociable companion that benefits from the genetic diversity of being a crossbreed. They are often described as friendly and eager to please, making them suitable for families. Their personality can take after either parent breed, so early socialisation helps ensure a well-rounded temperament.

Exercise Needs

Mixed Breed (Large) dogs typically need about 1 hour of daily exercise, though this varies based on their size and build. A mix of walks, play, and mental stimulation keeps them happy and healthy. Observe your individual dog's energy levels and adjust accordingly. Most mixed breeds are adaptable and enjoy a variety of activities.

Common Health Issues

Mixed Breed (Large) dogs may benefit from hybrid vigour, potentially reducing the risk of some inherited conditions. However, they can still be prone to health issues common to their size category. Regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, and parasite prevention are important. Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise is key to long-term health.

Grooming

Grooming needs for Mixed Breed (Large) dogs depend on their individual coat type — some may have shorter, low-maintenance coats while others require more regular brushing. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are important regardless of coat type. Establish a grooming routine early to keep your dog comfortable and healthy.

Famous Mixed Breed (Large) Owners

Owney, a scruffy mixed-breed dog of unclear origin, became the unofficial mascot of the United States Railway Mail Service in the 1880s after wandering into the Albany, New York post office and adopting the mail clerks. He travelled over 140,000 miles on mail trains across America, accumulating so many luggage tags from postal workers that President Benjamin Harrison is said to have ordered a special jacket to display them. Owney was eventually sent on a world tour, travelling to Japan, China, and Europe via postal routes. After his death in 1897, Owney was preserved by a taxidermist and is displayed at the National Postal Museum in Washington DC.
