Madame de Pompadour, the influential mistress of Louis XV, was also a devoted Papillon owner. The breed's name, meaning "butterfly" in French, reflects the distinctive ear fringes that captivated European nobility. Today, Papillons remain recognised for their intelligence and grace, qualities much admired by their historical and modern owners alike.
