About the Podenco

The Podenco is a medium-sized breed. Males typically weigh between 15 and 25 kg when fully grown, while females weigh 13 to 22 kg. With an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years, the Podenco is a moderately long-lived breed.

Temperament

Podencos are intelligent, loyal, and deeply affectionate with their families, yet often reserved or cautious around strangers. As an ancient primitive breed, they have a strong independent streak developed through centuries of hunting without close human direction. They are sensitive dogs that thrive on kindness and consistent handling. Their hunting heritage gives them a high prey drive, so they may chase small animals. Early socialisation is essential to build confidence and bring out the best in this fascinating and rewarding breed.

Exercise Needs

Podencos have high exercise needs and require at least 1-2 hours of vigorous daily activity. Long walks, jogging, and free running in a securely fenced area are ideal. As sighthounds and scent hunters, they have exceptional senses and an irresistible urge to chase, making recall very challenging, so a secure enclosure is essential for safe off-lead exercise. Mental stimulation through scent work, interactive games, and training sessions is just as important as physical exercise to keep a Podenco content.

Common Health Issues

The Podenco is a generally robust and hardy breed with few hereditary conditions. Like all sighthounds, they can be sensitive to anaesthetic drugs, so always inform your vet of this before any procedure. Their large, upright ears can collect debris, so regular ear cleaning is important to prevent infections. Dental hygiene needs regular attention as Podencos are prone to plaque buildup. Annual veterinary check-ups are recommended to keep them in top condition.

Grooming

Podencos are low-maintenance in terms of grooming. Their short, smooth coat requires only a weekly rub-down with a rubber mitt or soft brush to remove loose hair. They are clean dogs that rarely need bathing, though every 4-6 weeks with a gentle shampoo keeps the coat healthy. Nail trimming every 2-3 weeks, regular ear cleaning, and frequent teeth brushing complete the grooming routine. No professional grooming or clipping is needed.

Origin & History

Origin: Spain FCI Group Group 5 - Spitz and Primitive Types

The Podenco is an ancient Mediterranean sighthound with roots stretching back to the Pharaoh Hounds depicted in Egyptian tomb paintings from 3800 BC. Phoenician merchants introduced these dogs to the Iberian Peninsula around 700 BC, where they flourished across Spain and Portugal, adapting to local terrain and game. For over two millennia, Podencos served as trusted hunting companions to both nobility and rural hunters, revered for their speed, endurance, agility, and superior senses. In the 17th century, they were so valued that they appeared in noblemen's wills and enjoyed legal protection. Today, the Podenco family includes several distinct varieties, most notably the Podenco Ibicenco, Podenco Canario, Podenco Andaluz, Portuguese Podengo, and Podenco Maneto, each adapted to its regional home. Many Podencos now find loving homes through dedicated rescue organisations that work to rehabilitate and rehome dogs from the hunting community, giving these remarkable dogs a second chance at family life.

Famous Podenco Owners

The Podenco holds a special place in Mediterranean history, depicted in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings dating back to 3800 BC, making this one of the oldest dog types known to humanity. Phoenician merchants brought these dogs to the Iberian Peninsula around 700 BC, and by the 17th century they were prized possessions of Spanish nobility, sometimes included in aristocratic wills. Today, while still used as working hunting dogs in rural Spain and the Canary Islands, many Podencos have found their way to loving homes through dedicated charities such as Hope for Podencos, Podencos in Need (PINS), and the Podenco Alliance, which rescue and rehome dogs from the Spanish hunting industry. World Podenco Day is celebrated annually on 1 August to raise awareness of the breed's plight and wonderful qualities.
