Barry, a Saint Bernard at the Great St. Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps, became a legend for rescuing over 40 people buried in avalanches during his service from 1800 to 1812; his preserved body is displayed at the Natural History Museum in Bern. Napoleon Bonaparte crossed the St. Bernard Pass in May 1800 and wrote of the hospice monks and their remarkable dogs, bringing European attention to the breed. The Saint Bernard's extraordinary reputation for mountain rescue spread throughout the 19th century and inspired the work of painter Edwin Landseer, who depicted the breed saving lives in Alpine paintings that helped make it internationally famous.
